Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone N.P., Wyoming
Mammoth Hot Springs are close to the northern boundary of the national park near the Montana border. These hot springs are very different from other thermal areas in the area, largely because limestone is a relatively soft type of rock, allowing the travertine formations to grow much faster than other sinter formations. It has been described as looking like a cave turned inside out.

Amtrak's 'Empire Builder'
I departed Chicago Union Station on the 'Empire Builder' on August 19. Left the train at Saint Paul, Minnesota, to overnight and have a day in Minneapolis, on the opposite side of the Mississippi River. Around midnight on August 20, I boarded the 'Empire Builder' again in St. Paul for 2 nights and a day and a half of travel to reach my destination of Portland, Oregon.
Saint Paul & Minneapolis, Minnesota
Arrival in the city after midnight and then the day, August 20, for a quick look around Minneapolis. The morning was stormy and wet so I made use of the city's system of enclosed skywalks interconnecting city buildings above the streets. Once the storm passed the day was fine for walking around the city.

Canyon de Chelly, AZ
From our base in Chinle on the Navajo Reservation, we went in to the Canyon de Chelly National Monument. On the first day, we drove along the South Rim of the canyon stopping at several overlooks with sheer cliffs of up to around 200 metres height. The next day we went with a Navajo guide into the canyon, first up to the junction with Canyon Del Muerto and up into that canyon, then back again to go up in to Canyon de Chelly.

Our base was the nearby town of Torrey. On the first afternoon we drove down in to the south end of the park. Up early the next morning to catch the sunrise from Sunrise Point in Bryce Canyon and do a little hike along the canyon rim. Later we set out to hike down off the rim into the hoo doos but due to an electrical storm approaching we abandoned that.

The awesome jagged peaks of the Teton Range rising abruptly from the Jackson Hole valley are the dominant feature of this national park. We arrived on August 8th and moved around several locations in the park until moving on further to the north on August 10. We had another brief visit o August 13 on the way back to Jackson after a couple of days in the Yellowstone National Park to the north.
